The smallest fuel cell (3 millimetres across) has been successfuly created by US chemical engineers and will be able , in the future to replace batteries in gadgets. These fuel cells can store more energy than batteries on the same space.

The nonprofit Wikipedia project has met its $6 million fund raising goal, enables to improve the software of the site and upgrading the servers and the site bandwidth. About 50,000 contributors donated a total of $2 million in just 8 days.

Grape seeds extract found to assist leukemia cells to destroy themselves while leaving the healthy cells unharmed. This research was taking place at the University of Kentucky in Philadelphia. During the research, 76% of leukemia cells, which were exposed to the Grape extract died during a 24 hours period.

The FDA approves a new treatment for Prostate cancer which was developed by a private company. The drug (injection) lowers testosterone level which result in reducing growth of the tumors in the prostate. This cancer is the 2nd in number of cancer deaths in the United States, about 190,000 men were diagnosed with it and 29,000 died from prostate cancer in 2004, so new treatments and research are always in need.

The metal Osmium, which was never part of the anti cancer fight, is now being tested at Warwick university, UK for cancer treatment. The metal is closley related to Platinum, which is already in use for cancer treatment for some cancer types. The benefits of the Osmium is that it can be used for more types of cancer, it is cheaper than Platinum and it can be combined with Platinum treatment as well. In addition, Platinum is a toxic metal which cause many side effects and body cells can develop resistant toward it.

For the first time in history, researchers were able to produce embryonic stem cells from rats. For many of us that do not sound exiting, but for medical research this is a real revolution because rats are more ’related’ to mankind than mice – a fact that will allow scientists to create models much more effective than was possible until now in the research of human diseases.
