Soon: Green roofs at Toronto

At the end of April, all roofs in Toronto will have to be green, using various plants to create a barrier between the sun’s rays and the tiles or shingles of the roof. Toronto will become the first city in North America with a bylaw that requires that.

No More Disposable Water Bottles on Campus

A dozen of college campuses across the U.S. and Canada,  including Cornell and Stanford, will no longer supply disposable plastic water bottles, instead there will be some “hydration stations”, where students and faculty can refill their own bottles.

News from Canada: Crime rate falls to lowest in 40 years

according to Statistics Canada, Canada’s crime rate is the lowest since 1973, as the volume of crime dropped five per cent in 2010 from the year before.
The Crime Severity Index, which measures the severity of crime acts,  has also fallen six per cent and reached its lowest point  since 1998. Police reported about 7,200 fewer crime acts in 2010 than in the previous year.

Canadians Eat More Fruits and Veggies Than Before

According to new Statistics Canada data, The  Canadians are decreasing their daily calories and are eating more fruits and vegetables.
when comparing 2001 and 2009 the daily calories intake per person is down by 155 and during 2009 there was a  record consumption of vegetables.

Boy Saved From Cougar attack by Family’s Dog

Austin Forman, an 11 years old boy from British Columbia, was gathering firewood from his backyard when a cougar came. The dog, name angel, protected the boy and fought the cougar until an officer arrived and killed the cougar. Angel suffered injuries but survived the attack.

Dog Saves Lost Boy

A family who camped in the Yukon wilderness met a dog which had porcupine quills sticking out of its face and helped him. Last Thursday evening the 2 years old son of the family disappeared.  A rescue team tried to look for him since it was a cold and rainy night and the boy was wearing only a t shirt. After 24 hours they found the boy and the dog next to him, protecting him and keeping him warm.
